In 2013, the HSE stepped away from accreditation of organisations to provide First Aid Training. This meant that it was no longer necessary to seek out ‘HSE Approved’ trainers. Instead, it is now the responsibility of the employer to carry out their own due diligence to ensure:
A. The workforce has adequate training commensurate with the type of injuries likely to occur.
B. The chosen trainer has sufficient qualification to deliver the necessary training.
To date, nothing much has changed and organisations such as St Johns and British Red Cross still lead the way, charging up to £200 per delegate.
There are two recognised courses;
1. First Aid at Work which is a 3-day course leading to a 3-year qualification. Please note that this still requires an annual refresher.
2. Emergency First Aid at Work which is a one-day course leading to a one-year qualification.
In many cases the delegate is expected to undergo the training at a site away from the workplace which can incur further expense. A further problem occurs as staff turnover and relocation often leads to a lack of cover despite the employer’s best intentions.
The Solution
Simpler Safety now offers annual Emergency First Aid at Work training at your own premises. Actual cost per candidate is set at £65 with a minimum charge of £175 per course so ideally you need a minimum of three candidates.
The process starts with a ‘First Aid needs assessment’ in which we take account of specific issues such as epilepsy or any other special needs within your workforce. We then incorporate those specific requirements into the training module to provide bespoke training appropriate to your workforce.
Our trainer is a fully qualified Paramedic with over 30 year’s field experience, firstly with H.M. Armed Forces followed by a long service medal from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service.
The Emergency First Aid at Work course includes the following list which more than meets any foreseeable emergency likely to occur:
Action Emergency, Diagnosis, Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Defibrillation (AED), Bleeding wounds, Shock, Burns, Head & Spinal Injuries, Chest, Abdominal & Pelvic Injuries, Bone, Joint & Muscle Injuries, Sudden Illnesses, Poison, Bites & Stings, Heat & Cold Emergencies and Rescuing Moving Casualties.
